“Man-Up and swim to the other side of the cove!” I said to my 12-year-old son Caleb, a naturally talented, competitive swimmer.
“You Man-Up and race me!” was his reply.
Our family was enjoying a day on Cave Run Lake in Kentucky. We had anchored the boat in a small cove and were looking forward to entering the water.
“Ready, Go!” I shouted. Trying to get a jump off the “blocks.” Into the water we dove, head down, strong kick, breathing side to side…
“I’m going to whip his butt!” I thought to myself.
As I approached the other side of the cove, I lifted my head out of the water to look back at my son. To my disbelief, Caleb was ahead looking back at me. There was a half scared look on his face and his body language said he wasn’t sure how to act?
It was true, he had beaten Dad.
It’s a big deal the first time you beat Dad at anything. It’s part of the passage to manhood. It is also the moment I realized that I was becoming less, and he was becoming more.
I guess I have my Glory Days to remember!
